Kine A week said “Brand new robust ‘crooks slip out’ is peopled that have a colorful diversity regarding essential and you may arresting emails, that, skilfully manipulated by the copywriter and you will manager, allow the film so you’re able to tread liquid effectively. It is merely with the end up which begins to fall apart, nevertheless smack-right up finale rescues it on ‘red’. Excellently staged and you can wisely dialogued, it’ll have no higher complications for the life style off its extremely unsightly term.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Flick Bulletin told you “The movie motions in the a fast rate, the fresh conversation was advanced and you will characterisations generally effective. Richard Brody about The Yorker listed “It terse and you can taut film noir try centered on the brand new close and you will professional disputes of the label reputation, the new unlawful mastermind (played because of the Cock Powell) behind a classy illegal gambling enterprise. The newest film’s publisher and you may manager, Robert Rossen, creates a beneficial multidimensional chess video game, for mortal stakes, ranging from Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Received), a beneficial cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a great scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sibling (Nina Foch) worked during the gambling enterprise and dated good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic script, the fresh new cast’s suavely controlled gestures from like and danger, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can stylishly assertive images (also his political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet in depth spectacle an invisible classic of your own style.” [ ten ]

Picture has actually action and you may anticipation, and you may certain brief touches from humor to add preferences. Ace performances because of the Cock Powell, since a playing family overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, because an authorities inspector, plus in the rating . Although the patch comes after a common trend, the fresh characterizations is actually fresh and the shows adequate in order to overbalance. Dialogue was terse and you will relevant, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney reach. Uncommon digital camera angles come-along occasionally to intensify attract and momentarily arrest the attention. Good teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing just like the movie director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, original writer and you can user manufacturer, also helps with making this a flaccid manufacturing.” [ 11 ]

It is mostly a question of seeing Mr. Powell undergo their paces smartly when you are a big shed off stars and you will performers give your classic help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice nothing woman which brings out the latest finest in him and Ellen Received is the easy and you may slinky vixen whom will get him on jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily just like the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb really does a unique able trip as the an exhausted cops inspector which in the end closes the way it is. Significant amounts of ingesting and you can smoking is completed of the the concerned.” [ several ]
